LA MANIA CAMPAIGNS
THE PLEASURE OF RETURN
Summer makes a convincing case for doing less. The easy pleasure of long mornings, late afternoons, days with nowhere in particular to be. And yet, somewhere towards the end of August, another kind of pleasure begins to emerge: the anticipation of September. Of getting dressed with somewhere to go. Of seeing familiar faces, returning to our routines, making plans and filling the calendar again.
We like to think of work as part of that life: not simply a place of business, but a place where we get to be ourselves, use our talents, exchange ideas and engage with the world. And work, of course, does not always happen in an office, nor does it always come with a title. There is the work of caring, feeding, remembering, arranging - the often unseen gestures without which families and communities simply would not function. This, too, is work. And there is a particular luxury in getting dressed for the life you have made, wherever that life happens.
Georgia O’Keeffe, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, wrote to a friend that she couldn’t wait to get back to work in the autumn. There is pleasure not only in getting away from everyday life, but in having made one you want to return to. O’Keeffe’s New York paintings of the mid-1920s, depicting Manhattan’s skyscrapers, became a visual reference for the photoshoot location. Documented in one of Warsaw’s office towers, it maps the topography of the city’s working skyline.
